One Mother's Story

Meet Kerry and her son, Kevin

When my son Kevin was just eight, I had to face a reality no parent imagines.

My child’s developmental disabilities meant he would never live independently and would always need direct care.

With that came a constant worry: who will care for my child when I no longer can? It’s a fear shared by thousands of families across Michigan—parents who lie awake wondering about their children’s futures.

Many Hands was born from a simple, powerful wish: to create a vibrant community where everyone can belong and thrive, regardless of ability. I knew Kevin—and so many others—needed more than care. They needed connection. That journey led me to Camphill in Pennsylvania, a Lifesharing community where individuals with disabilities and their caregivers live together as family.

Camphill’s 65-year legacy was impressive, but it was Mary who changed everything. A young resident who loved baking bread, Mary walked independently to the community bakery—something unsafe for her anywhere else. That evening, surrounded by friends praising her bread, Mary beamed. I watched her transform. In that moment, I saw the power of belonging, of contributing, of mattering. And I knew: This is what I want for my son and so many others back home.

What began as a mother’s vision became a movement. In 2019, Many Hands was incorporated. In just a few years, we’ve assembled a remarkable team—social workers, healthcare professionals, behavior experts, financial advisors, attorneys, and parent advocates—designing a replicable community that benefits its residents, neighbors, and the environment.

An angel donor, moved by the mission, said, “This must be built. We will help you buy the land.” Their gift allowed us to purchase 94 beautiful acres in Dexter, Michigan. We plan to break ground in 2025.

Now we need your help to build the homes, workshop spaces, and gathering areas that will give adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities not just care, but a place where they truly belong. A place where they wake with purpose,

share meals with friends, and contribute their unique gifts to the world.

Will you help us build this haven of hope? Your support will transform a vision into reality—creating a caring place to belong, right here in Michigan.
